Google has a flood of phones and tablets coming next week

Google has an event coming next week and since major companies can’t keep their secrets quiet lately, we know pretty much exactly what’s coming. So what’s coming, and how much should you care?

- First of all, Android 4.2 officially arrives, complete with user sharing, so now people can reconfigure the tablet or phone for multiple users. That has some appeal.

- A 32 GB Nexus 7, both with and without a 3G connection. If you need more space on your seven-inch tablet, or can’t wait to hit a Starbucks for a WiFi connection, this might be useful to you.

- A ten-inch Nexus tablet. This I’m a little less enthused about. It’s built by Samsung, which has a spotty record with tablets, and Android 4.2 is going to have to be mind-blowing to get Apple fans to dump the iPad… something I don’t see happening.

- Another round of Nexus smartphones. Again, yawn. I’m sure they’ll be awesome gear: the LG-built phone will have a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, which is very, very fast. But if your contract isn’t up, I’m not sure Google can shake up the smartphone market.

We’ll know more next week.

Dan Seitz
About Dan Seitz... Dan Seitz is a semi-professional nerd (he'll have to code a homebrew game for the NES before he goes pro). He grew up fiddling with video game systems, computers, cameras, and other technology you should never hand to an eight-year-old if you want it back in pristine condition. Currently, he lives in Boston with his girlfriend, her cat, a Shih Tzu, and far too many objects with processors.
