Vapp: Voice control for your iPhone’s camera

By 11.14.12

There are many problems with using your smartphone as your default camera, but most of them involve me lecturing you over sensor sizes and you falling asleep. The most practical one, though, is the fact that it can be tricky to get the damn camera to actually fire off a snapshot.

Vapp makes it as simple as yelling at the camera.

As you may have guessed, Vapp is a vocal-control app for your iPhone. You can tweak the settings to your liking, and once you’ve got everything the way you want it, Vapp will take a picture for you on demand.

It’s actually very good at what it does: Vapp is able to pretty much take a photo even in noisy places, although you might have to alter your settings depending on where you are. The photo viewing and editing tools are fairly basic compared to what iOS has on board, but you can always open photos with that software, or use tools like Afterglow.

In short, it’s a camera app with an excellent feature that makes snapshots easier to shoot.

Now about those sensors…

About Dan Seitz... Dan Seitz is a semi-professional nerd (he'll have to code a homebrew game for the NES before he goes pro). He grew up fiddling with video game systems, computers, cameras, and other technology you should never hand to an eight-year-old if you want it back in pristine condition. Currently, he lives in Boston with his girlfriend, her cat, a Shih Tzu, and far too many objects with processors.
