I’m getting a lot of questions about Windows 8 as its release date approaches, so I’m going to tell you what I tell everybody when a new version of Windows approaches.
Don’t buy it. Not because it’s a waste of money or a bad OS or any of a litany of reasons. You shouldn’t buy it now because you will likely end up buying a computer later that has it for free.
The simple fact of the matter is that computers are not built to last. You buy a computer, at around the two year mark it’s going to start breaking down. It’ll probably function adequately for years, but it’ll start groaning when you ask it to play a game or crying when an intense Web site loads.
So you’ll donate it to a school or something and go buy a shiny new one. And this shiny new one will have Windows 8 on it.
In the meantime, Windows 7 will do absolutely everything you need. Unless your job requires it or you have somehow wiped your hard drive completely and fear Ubuntu, there’s no reason to buy Windows 8. The Windows you have now will be fine.
