More bits of PlayStation 4 info we finally know about

Even though yesterday’s video recaps covered the bulk of the new PlayStation 4, there’s still stuff that wasn’t addressed. Mostly because some additional bits of info only came to light after the fact.

Sony Computer Entertainment

Unfortunately, and is often the case, for every answer, there’s another question.

The PS4 will be able to stream PS1, PS2, and PS3 games. Yup, the PS4 is not backwards compatible with the PS3, as expected, but you’ll be able to stream those games, plus the plan calls for old PS1 and PS2 games to be included in the mix. Sounds awesome, to have every home PlayStation game accessible via just one box, right?

Well, let’s say you own Metal Gear Rising, which just came out; will you be entitled to access to the streaming version for free? Going by how others are handling their digital initiatives, the answer I’m afraid is not bloody like, sorry. Oh, and there’s another reason why you won’t be getting rid of your PS3 anytime soon…

Your downloaded PS3 content will not transfer. The above applies to only disc based content. What about downloadable games? Sorry, but those won’t be making the jump. Again, there’s no backwards compatibility when it comes to hardware, and I guess streaming bite-sized offerings is too much effort.

This is especially bad news if you’ve purchased add ons, like songs in Rock Band. And all of a sudden, steamed PS3 games sound more complicated than it initially believed. Again, due to DLC customization, the game they have on their end might not be the one that you’re used to.

You don’t have to be online all the time. On the plus side, the PS4 does not require an always-on online connection, as many of us feared. Thank goodness.

You should be able to play used games. Maybe. Hopefully. This is where things get really confusing. Shortly after the press conference, a Sony big boss told one outlet that blocking used games would not be happening in fairly clear terms, but another spokesperson when talking to another outlet was super vague about it. So many are, justifiable, fishy about the whole thing.

Otherwise, we still don’t know what it looks like, though $20 says it’ll probably be black and rectangular, nor do we know how much it’ll cost. BTW, the PS4 (well the controller and one game) made an appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night…
