iOS 6: All the improvements you actually care about

By / 06.12.12

There wasn’t much in the way of interesting new toys at Apple’s big press event…but there were a lot of software overhauls. Here’s the stuff you actually care about.

First of all, and this isn’t really a shocker: Siri is coming to iPad. That’ll be handy.

Siri has become more useful for sports scores, statistics, and data. For example, if you ask Siri what the Red Sox’s overall record this season is, it’ll give you detailed information about their wins, losses, and the current suicide rate of Red Sox Nation over being at the bottom. OK, not that last one.

Not useful is Siri’s restaurant function. You can make a reservation through OpenTable, but unfortunately, the reviews come from Yelp. So if you want to know what entitled whiny college students think of restaurants, congratulations, Apple loves you. Everybody else will want to go for the new Foursquare app.

And, also not a surprise, Apple has dumped Google Maps. The new Apple Maps (Mapple?) will feature turn-by-turn navigation, better traffic information and even more Yelp. It’ll also feature a 3D feature called Flyover, and mapping will work in the lock screen.

So, there you go: the iOS has become more useful, but there’s nothing hugely sexy on here just yet. For that we’re really going to have to wait and see what developers do with iOS 6 apps.

About Dan Seitz... Dan Seitz is a semi-professional nerd (he'll have to code a homebrew game for the NES before he goes pro). He grew up fiddling with video game systems, computers, cameras, and other technology you should never hand to an eight-year-old if you want it back in pristine condition. Currently, he lives in Boston with his girlfriend, her cat, a Shih Tzu, and far too many objects with processors.
