Google Voice Search versus Siri: Who wins?

By / 10.31.12

Recently, Google decided to pick yet another fight with Apple in the iOS App store, and updated its free Google Voice Search app to accept voice commands. Needless to say, this has been encouraging people to compare the two.

Who wins? Well, it depends on what you want.

While it’s fun to compare the two, the simple reality is that one is an app designed to be a “personal assistant,” while the other is designed to search the Internet. For example, when I asked Siri what Marcellus Wallace looks like, she sadly did not respond with anything other than a censored reply and the word “No.” Google Voice Search spat out just about every picture of Ving Rhames it could find.

Siri was better at the “assistant” stuff. Ask it for everything Sofia Vergara has ever been in, and it’ll offer up a list of her achievements. So will Google, just in a slightly different way, but they’re both pulling the same information. The big difference is really that Google Voice Search won’t read results back to you, and Siri will.

So really, if you search while driving, use Siri. But in any other situation? It’s not going to make much of a difference.

About Dan Seitz... Dan Seitz is a semi-professional nerd (he'll have to code a homebrew game for the NES before he goes pro). He grew up fiddling with video game systems, computers, cameras, and other technology you should never hand to an eight-year-old if you want it back in pristine condition. Currently, he lives in Boston with his girlfriend, her cat, a Shih Tzu, and far too many objects with processors.
