Facebook for iOS is testing the most annoying alerts ever

The last thing anybody, even the twitchiest, most “connected” person you know, wants is more goddamn alerts on your phone.

So of course Facebook is testing a new alert, and brother, is it ever annoying.

Basically, if you don’t post an update on Facebook for a while, the current test pops up a little alert… telling you you haven’t posted an update in a while, and don’t you want to post one, huh, huh, do ya, do ya, huh, c’mon, do ya, huh?

As you might have guessed, this has been greeted less than enthusiastically in most quarters of the technology community. Why, precisely, would Facebook think this was a good idea?

It’s built on user content, that’s why. The more updates you post, the more eyeballs come to Facebook, and the more ads those eyeballs see. So basically Facebook is demanding that you work for it.

There is, of course, a simple solution to this, by which I mean deleting Facebook off your phone entirely. And if they do actually pull the trigger and start harrassing you for updates, that’s exactly what you should do.
