Well, he is getting closer.

Roger Federer earned his 17th Grand Slam--and 7th Wimbledon--title earlier today, defeating fourth ranked Andy Murray 4-6. 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. Federer, who already holds the record for most career Grand Slam titles in tennis history, now has 6 more major championships than rival Rafael Nadal, the only other active player with over 10 Grand Slams.

Murray on the other hand, suffered yet another heartbreak at the hands of his longtime adversary. The Scottish-born talent, who is the first British player to reach the Wimbledon Final since 1938, has still yet to win a Grand Slam event.

As demonstrated by his emotional address to both Federer and the fans, Murray's frustration has reached a point of crushing acceptance. Its heartbreaking to a point, but it also demonstrates one the underlying reasons why we love sports for what they are. Murray is unmistakably going through the toughest part of the hero's journey, and his "I'm so close I can taste it" place in the tennis world should only add even more fuel to his incredibly bright fire. When he finally breaks through, it'll be moments like this that will make his ultimate triumph taste that much sweeter.
