Syracuse avoided becoming the first No. 1 seed to ever be tripped up by a No. 16 seed today against UNC Ashville moments ago, but not without some controversy. The Orange trailed by four points at halftime and were unable to separate from the upset-minded challengers, who kept it a one-possession game into the game’s final minute.
That’s when referee Ed Corbett awarded Syracuse the ball after this exchange, which, at best, is highly questionable. One could argue that the Orange were given possession in lieu of calling a foul, but it’s still pretty sketchy. This followed a couple of other noteworthy calls – a blatant Syracuse goaltending in the first half and a late-game lane violation – that were the talk of Twitter.
No matter your take on the calls, we can all agree Jim Boeheim’s crew must be much, much better if they’re to make a prolonged run.
