Detroit Red Wings captain and living legend Nicklas Lidstrom announced his retirement this week, ending what is sure to be a Hall of Fame career. The entire state of Michigan took the following day off to mourn the loss. Another, more productive tribute took place last night at Joe Louis Arena, where the Red Hot Chili Peppers were playing a concert.

Drummer and Will Ferrell lookalike Chad Smith talked about the defenseman’s sterling body of work and then pulled the now-retired Lidstrom onstage to address the crowd.

The band proceeded to play “Give It Away” as a nod to all of the turnovers Lidstrom created for opposing teams.

Pretty awesome moment.
