You probably have not heard of Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher James McDonald. Some of you may not have ever heard of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Well, McDonald didn't have a stellar pitching performance Thursday night: 7 innings pitched and four 4 earned runs, which does not constitute that most worthless of unofficial stats, "quality start." However, don't tell that to James McDonald.

After he got the last out in the 7th inning the Pittsburgh pitcher danced off the mound, with the exuberant pointing of the fingers because this was the first game in 24 straight starts that he completed 7 innings. He also hit a double and tallied three RBI. He finally shimmied into the Pirate's dugout and continued the jubilation where he gave himself a congratulatory Gatorade shower. Now the dousing of Gatorade is usually reserved for winning a big game, like, say the Super Bowl. This was the 7th inning and the Pirates were clinging to a 6-4 lead over the Chicago Cubs.

Guess what happened next? Of course the Cubs scored three in the 8th inning and won the game 7-6, completing the 4-game sweep of the Pirates and knocking them farther out of playoff contention. Another case of premature celebration.
