Argh, oof, this is painful. It always hurts me to see someone completely bomb a joke, but the awkwardness is multiplied by 5,000 when it's a failed attempt at racial humor. On last night's CBS pregame show, Doug Gottlieb attempted to smoothly point out that he was the only white guy in the studio of five by saying he was there to "bring the white man's perspective." There was like a three-second pause where no one reacted. Then, FINALLY, everyone seemed to go "Oooo" at the same time, while Greg Gumbel looked for somewhere to hide, Greg Anthony looked pissed, and Barkley, of course, looked like he didn't really give a shit.
Gottlieb later apologized. "It was not a smart thing to say and I apologize," he said.
Barkley recognized it as nothing more than a bombed joke. "I know this has nothing to do with the game; I want to say something about Doug Gottlieb. He made a joke earlier tonight and people are going crazy. All those idiots on Twitter, which I would never ever do, all you people at home who've got no life and are talking bad about Doug Gottlieb, get a life. It's over with. It's no big deal."
