Tonight's national championship game between Michigan and Louisville seems it's coming to us straight from a 1994 time machine. There are the names Tim Hardaway and Glenn Robinson. There's a dominant Michigan team. There's Rick Pitino. AND there might be the long-awaited reunion of the Fab Five—Ray Jackson, Jimmy King, Juwan Howard, and Jalen Rose will all be in the Georgia Dome tonight to pull for the Wolverines.
One member of their crew, though, has been conspicuously absent from any talk of a reunion. That would be Mr. Timeout himself, Chris Webber. Webber is said to hold a grudge against the university, both because he feels he's been unfairly scapegoated for that technical foul in the 1993 national championship game, and because he was hit in 2002 with charges for accepting cash from a booster. That charge led to Michigan losing its 1993 Final Four banner.
Despite it all, Rose wants C-Webb there tonight. The vocal ESPN broadcaster taped a podcast with Bill Simmons yesterday to publicly plead for Webber to head over to the Georgia Dome for the game. He's even got a ticket for his former teammate. We'll see if Webber takes him up.
