We usually don't follow professional rugby, especially the going-ons in England's Aviva Premiership. However, we couldn't resist posting this after noticing it in quite a few British papers over the weekend. On Frida,y Manu Tuilagi, a Samoan-born centre for the Leicester Tigers, went H.A.M., delivering a brutal attack on Northampton winger Chris Ashton. First he decked him with a monster hit. After Ashton gave a little shove back while getting up, Tuilagy coldcocked him with three punches straight to the face. Ashton left the game and required stitches to his right eye. Meanwhile, to the ire of Northampton fans, Tuilagy only walked away from the scrap with a yellow card. The press box at Welford Road is also scratching their heads about why Tuilagi wasn't red carded for battering Ashton with his fists. The Guardian's Michael Aylwin puts it bluntly in an endearing and oh-so-British way:
It was a sickening injustice for Northampton. Not only did Tuilagi take out Ashton off the ball but, when Ashton pushed him in indignation, Tuilagi went at him, throwing two jabs with his left, followed by an almighty right hook to the temple. As if that were not enough, the touch judge, Robin Goodliffe, described the sequence to the referee, Wayne Barnes, as involving punches from both players. The advice was completely wrong. And so not only did Tuilagi get away with a mere yellow card, but Ashton was shown a yellow, too, for being taken out off the ball and punched in the head.
