The Rockaway Peninsula area of Queens was one of the hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy. The unmitigated destruction has rendered the area a temporary wasteland, leaving homes destroyed and schools closed indefinitely.
Beach Channel High School, located basically a pebble throw from water, saw their equipment washed out by the storm, and their field turned into an emergency helipad. So despite qualifying for the playoffs, it was unclear whether or not they were going to be able to even make it on the field--especially considering that only a staggering 15% of students showed up on the first day of classes at the school's temporary location.
Yet, as we've learned time and time again from the entertainment industry, sport-fueled will conquers all. Which is why when 25 players suited up for their playoff game against the Port Richmond of Staten Island, Beach Channel coach Victor Nazario was able to give a speech laced with such a dangerous amount of inspirational sincerity.
You could really tell how badly these guys have been affected by the storm, and how deeply the coach feels for his team, a team that's clearly become a family.
Unfortunately, Beach Channel fell by a score of 38-6, effectively ending their season. Wins and losses though, are suddenly unimportant when it comes to stuff as meaningful as this.
