For Cameron Lyle, the decision was easy. Saving a life or finishing his NCAA career. Lyle, a shotputter for the University of New Hampshire will donate his bone marrow to a leukemia patient desperately in need. Because time is of the essence, Lyle will have to cut short his senior season.
He doesn’t seem to mind. In fact, he seems thrilled about it. The man’s my hero. He’s your hero too. He’s everyone’s hero.
Lyle will be donating his bone marrow to an anonymous recipient on April 24. As a result, he will have to miss the final two meets of his career, including the America East Championships, where he was hoping to throw shot put .
“I knew right away I was definitely going to donate,” said Lyle, who graduated from Timberlane Regional High School in 2009. “I was pretty terrified at first, but it is starting to settle in.”
Lyle joined the Bone Marrow Registry two years ago with a simple swab inside the cheek. If all goes well, the donation will be done tomorrow. Now, if you’ll excuse me I’m off to create the Cameron Lyle good guy meme.
