California Chrome owner Steve Colborn says he’s ashamed of his behavior, breaks down in tears on GMA

California Chrome owner Steve Coburn was angry after the Belmont Stakes, angry that his horse fell short of the Triple Crown. Somebody stuck a mic in his face after the race and he said some not nice things. “This is a coward’s way out” and basically called everyone “goddamn cheaters.” He didn’t back down from those comments Sunday and in fact, took it even further.

“They hold out two (races) and then come back and run one,” said Coburn. “That would be like me at 6-2 … playing basketball with a kid in a wheelchair. They haven’t done anything with their horses in the Triple Crown. … You ask yourself, ‘Would it be fair if I played basketball with a child in a wheel chair?’ ”

Suffice it to say, Steve Colburn kinda went loco. The wheelchair basketball analogy was uh, weird and not at all appropriate. Finally, someone with a functional brain talked Steve Colburn off the ledge. This morning he broke down in tears in an interview with GMA host Robin Roberts.

“I’m very ashamed of myself. I need to apologize to a lot of people, including my wife Caroline.”
“I want to apologize to everyone associated with Tonalist.”
“I need to apologize to the world and America, our fans and those who gave us so much support”

So I think we can let this go now. Dude was emotional, dude said some unfortunate things, dude apologized. Let’s go back to not caring about horse racing for the next 11 months. Agreed?
