Last night, Roy Hibbert—who normally seems like a funny and bright dude (judging by his Twitter account, at least)—found himself in deep, foul-smelling shit after giving a post-game press conference for the ages. The center answered a question on his Defensive Player of the Year snub by addressing the media as "Ya'll motherf*ckers," and, later, he punctuated a joke about his trainer with a Lil Wayne-approved "no homo." If you squint hard, you can see the Pacers PR guy crawling underneath a table and going into a fetal position.
Hibbert will probably be fined, and everyone except the SportsCenter talking heads will forget about the whole thing come the Game 7 opening tip. Also, keep in mind, calling the dude a bigot is ridiculous, eh? He screwed up a joke. AND, he was one of the first guys to publicly back Jason Collins when he came out. The guy just acted bizarrely, not hatefully.
Here's the apology:
I am apologizing for insensitive remarks made during the postgame press conference after our victory over Miami Saturday night. They were disrespectful and offensive and not a reflection of my personal views. I used a slang term that is not appropriate in any setting, private or public, and the language I used definitely has no place in a public forum, especially over live television. I apologize to those who I have offended, to our fans and to the Pacers’ organization. I sincerely have deep regret over my choice of words last night.
