Here's what you need to know about this video that's making the rounds of Caroline Wozniacki pulling Rory McIlroy out of the crowd last night at Madison Square Garden to play a point against Maria Sharapova. About two minutes earlier, coming out of a changeover at 5-4 in the second set, with music still playing, Wozniacki pulled an eight-year-old girl out of the front row to dance with her on the court. Not to be out done, Sharapova pulled a 50-year-old bald guy in a suit out of the crowd and started dancing with him. Once the dancing was over she asked: "Why do you always get the kids, and I get the creeps?" A little later Wozniacki asks, "Any hot guys in here want to dance with me?" Rory, the new #1 golfer in the world, shoots his hand up (with a little help from his friend) and is eventually handed a racket. Watch the whole sequence below and find out how this little act of fun basically cost Wozniacki the match.
Here's Sharapova dancing with the old bald guy, followed by Wozniack pulling McIlroy out of the stands:
Since Rory won the point, Wozniacki wanted it to count as the first point in the game. Sharapova seemed to be going along with it, but the chair umpire vetoed that idea. Wozniacki, still kind of laughing and giddy over the whole thing, then proceeded to lose four straight points, and thus the game, set, match. After, Sharapova remarked that Rory won "more points than Caroline" — ouch! — though I think she meant in that last game.
Andy Roddick took on (and eventually beat) Roger Federer in the second match of the night, and had more fun than just about anyone else in the building — especially Federer. At one point early in the first set, someone in the crowd yelled out "Rafa!" Without missing a beat, Roddick went straight into Nadal mode, rolling up his sleeves, doing some high knee jumps, and playing the entire point like the Spaniard — complete with celebratory fist pump at the end. Great stuff:
Here's Roddick throwing a racket after a point and nearly hitting a ballgirl (h/t to T-Dubs for the video):
Here, by the way, is my video of the McIlroy-Sharapova point from up in section 331:
