Roger Goodell was too emotionally invested in the bounty case so he tagged in an old buddy—former commish Paul Tagliabue. Good ol’ boys network? Good ol’ boys network.

The announcement came from NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith on Twitter.

Per Smith, Goodell will hand the baton to former Commissioner Paul Tagliabue.

It’s a power the Commissioner possess under the Collective Bargaining Agreement. And Smith got advance notice because the CBA requires Goodell to consult with the NFLPA.

Goodell makes a wise choice here in recusing himself. Whether he wants to admit it or not, this had become personal. He was embarrassed after a three judge panel overruled his earlier suspension and wanted revenge.

Now Goodell’s wrath lies in the hands of one, Paul Tagliabue. As one astute observer noted, uh, WTF?

Can Tagliabue remain impartial? Sure. Why not? I once saw a planned sex tape turn one woman’s family into a multi-million dollar enterprise. So yes, anything’s possible.

But probable? No.

So I guess what I’m saying is, get used to that seat Jonathan Vilma. You’ll be in it for another year.
