The best bit of news out of today's Hot Clicks is the tidbit via Yahoo and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that HBO is prepping a "Hard Knocks"-style show leading up to the New Years Day Winter Classic between the Penguins and the Capitals. The open-air game at Heinz Field — and presumably the mini-series — will star the two biggest names in hockey: Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby. The two captains, and their teammates and coaches, will be mic'd up in the days leading up to, as well as during, the big game. As we explained when we shared with you some behind-the-scenes details about how HBO and NFL Films produces "Hard Knocks," there will likely be dozens of cameras at home, on the road, and in the lockerrooms filming Ovie and Sid the Kid's every moves.
We've long been fans of HBO's Boxing "24/7" shows and of course "Hard Knocks," so we've been waiting for the series to expand to other sports. A mid-season basketball series seems like the next obvious sport. Baseball would have to revert back to the pre-season format, although other than figuring out the last few bench and bullpen spots, how much drama can you really get out of Spring Training? (I guess that's what people probably said before "Hard Knocks" first aired.)
What sport and what team do you guys think should get the next "Hard Knocks"/"24/7" treatment? And will you watch the hockey version later this winter? Sound Off in the comments...
