Of Course Notre Dame Football Is Getting A ‘Hard Knocks’ Like TV Series

With tonight’s premiere of another NFL Hard Knocks season featuring the Houston Texans, news broke out that the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team may soon be the first collegiate team to get similar treatment, opening up their hallowed halls to let viewers see the ins and outs of the programs.

Of course, this probably has Knute Rockne rolling over in his grave, but that’s a whole different conversation—or maybe an episode on the new Showtime show.

According to Stephen Espinoza, Showtime‘s sports executive vice president and general manager and via The Chicago Tribune:

“We’re honored and thrilled to be granted access to profile a college football program with a legacy as storied and as fascinating as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The passion of the players and head coach Brian Kelly will make for a compelling television series that will appeal beyond hardcore college football fans to all viewers who appreciate great storytelling.”

My first thought is, haven’t we already seen something like this before with Notre Dame? Yeah, there was some movie about some came-from-nothing kid. What was that movie’s name again? I just can’t think of it… oh well.

My second thought, though, is that with the temper that head coach Brian Kelly has, this series could be fucking epic, with one-liners and fiery red faces at an all-time high, as Notre Dame coaches show that the Irish really do have the worst mouths and tempers.

The first episode is scheduled to air Sept. 8, according to Showtime Sports, which would be three days after the Irish kick-off their 2015 season against the Texas Longhorns in a matchup between two, primetime programs. Thirty-minute episodes will air weekly at 10 p.m. ET from there.

Love ’em or hate ’em, Notre Dame football still draws a crowd better than a golfer with an arm growing out of his ass, and seeing them whore themselves out to try and stay ahead of the curve in college football with an all-access show is something that will definitely bring eyeballs to the TV.

Brian Kelly + ND’s Tradition + Drunk Catholics + Dancing Leprechauns + Failed Expectations = Gold (And I’m not just talking about the color of the Irish’s helmets).
