The baseball season starts back up on Thursday with a six-pack of games, which reminds us that we'll soon see warmer weather. God willing. It's still slated to be in the high 30s and low 40s over the weekend in the Northeast, which reminds us that this season is starting awfully early this year. No one expected the Giants to win the World Series at the beginning of last year, but some people like yours truly saw some breakout potential. Per usual I’m taking a stance on a team’s predicted results by taking a side on the Vegas over/under predictions for each MLB team. We’re looking to repeat last year’s success (17-13; Best Bets: 6-2) with another strong year. At the end, I'll make my predictions for the playoffs and World Series.
Arizona Diamondbacks: 72.5 Games
Mr. T's Pick: Under
The Dbacks have solid young hitters, but their pitching leaves much to be desired. That’s not a good look in the most home run–friendly ballpark in baseball.
Atlanta Braves: 88
Mr. T's Pick: Over
There’s a new skipper on board with Freddie Gonzalez replacing Bobby Cox, but that shouldn’t disrupt the operation too much. The talent was upgraded with the signing of Dan Uggla (poised for a monster fantasy season) and they’ve got plenty of young arms to fill out the rotation and bullpen.
Baltimore Orioles: 76
Mr. T's Pick: Under
The Orioles are still a couple years away from being relevant again and the talent they acquired in the offseason (Vlad and Derek Lee) are on one-year deals and will be on their way out the door at the trade deadline.
Boston Red Sox: 95.5
Mr. T's Pick: Over
The Red Sox spent big on their offense in free agency after last year’s disappointment, so the pressure is on their pitching staff to make a statement.
Chicago Cubs: 81.5
Mr. T's Pick: Under
I’m torn on the Cubs this season and I feel like the over/under number is very fair. The bullpen is a little shaky, but Matt Garza should put in a strong year and the lineup is capable of putting some runs on the board.
Chicago White Sox: 85.5
Mr. T's Pick: Over
The addition of Adam Dunn should boost the offense tremendously, but the success of the team will rest heavily on the shoulders of the starting pitching, especially Jake Peavy. He’ll have to prove he can return to high-end form in order for them to win the division.
Cincinnati Reds: 85
Mr. T's Pick: Under
The Reds can definitely hammer the baseball, but their pitching should come back to earth after last year’s success. Most things went right for the Reds last year, so there’s a good chance of luck evening out as well.
Cleveland Indians: 71.5
Mr. T's Pick: Under
Carlos Santana is the only reason to watch these guys play. Sizemore’s still recovering, there’s not much other talent around, and the pitching staff is miserable.
Colorado Rockies: 86.5
Mr. T's Pick: Over
Most people notice the hitting that goes on at Coors Field, but the pitching staff in Denver is something to be reckoned with. If Tulowitzki stays healthy and González repeats his MVP-type numbers, the Rockies will make a run at the Wild Card.
Detroit Tigers: 84
Mr. T's Pick: Over
The addition of Victor Martinez should stabilize the lineup and the pitching staff is reasonably strong. The issue is they’ll be competing against both the White Sox and the Twins for the division in a race that should go down to the final weeks.
Florida Marlins: 82
Mr. T's Pick: Under
The Marlins will do what they usually seem to do in recent years and that’s play right around the .500 mark. The top of the division is improved and the Nationals got better as well, so the likelihood is they’ll fall just short of expectations.
Houston Astros: 71.5
Mr. T's Pick: Under
The Astros will compete with the Pirates to be the worst team in the National League this year. Talent is not something that’s prevalent on this 25-man roster these days.
Kansas City Royals: 68.5
Mr. T's Pick: Under
Speaking of teams accustomed to being devoid of talent, the Royals' major league roster exemplifies a bare cupboard. There’s a plan in place, as was detailed in Sports Illustrated recently, there just won’t be any success this season.
Los Angeles Angels: 83
Mr. T's Pick: Over
The Angels nosedived last season, but they should bounce back and be right around the expected number of wins. The key to the offense will be better-than-expected productivity from the infield.
Los Angeles Dodgers: 84
Mr. T's Pick: Over
The Dodgers have one of the better pitching staffs in the National League, but they need their core of Kemp, Loney, and Ethier to play like they did in '09 and not '10.
