‘Back To The Future II’ Predicted The 2015 World Series, And One Of The Teams Is Promoting The Hell Out Of It

It’s been over a quarter century since ‘Back to the Future II’ (1989) hit theaters and predicted a 2015 World Series outcome with the Cubs defeating Miami. At the time of the movie the Miami Marlins didn’t even exist, and that confused the bejeezus out of Marty McFly. Just the fact that the Cubs would make the playoffs is enough to throw a man off, but them winning the World Series against a team that didn’t even exist? Well that’s pretty darn unsettling if you ask me.

Flash forward to this very instant and the Miami Marlins are announcing year-long ‘Back to the Future’ promotions to milk up every bit of free publicity they can. According to Bovada the Cubs are favored over the Marlins to win the 2015 World Series at 16/1, which is laughable considering it’s been 104 years since the Cubbies won it all. The Marlins are listed at 33/1 to win the 2015 World Series.

As we saw in the video above, back in 1989 the Cubs were predicted to win the 2015 World Series with odds of 100-to-1, which would have been a handsome pay day to anyone smart enough to throw cash on the hypothetical outcome (like Biff did).

So what do the Miami Marlins have in store for 2015’s ‘Back to the Future II’ promotions? Quite a few things actually:

1. “Back To Opening Day!” (April 5, 2015) – #BTOD93! What if social media were around for the first pitch in Marlins history? On April 5, 2015, the day before our 2015 Marlins Opening Day vs Atlanta at Marlins Park, the Marlins social media team will step into the Deloreon with @BillyTheMarlin, load up on plutonium, fire up the flux capacitor and go back in time to cover that April 5, 1993 game minute-by-minute on social media! GREAT SCOTT (POSE)!

2. The “#RewriteTheFuture” Series (June 1, 2 & 3, 2015) – During this three-game homestand vs Chicago, the Marlins will look to “#RewriteTheFuture” and this time, DEFEAT the Cubs in 2015… changing the course of history – and the Future! Let’s #RewriteTheFuture together, #FishFamily!

There will even be a very special Social Media Night on the June 2nd #TwitterTuesday, where special event package buyers will receive a special limited-edition “MIAMI: 2015 American League Champions” t-shirt.

3. “Back To The Future” Night (September 25, 2015) – This is the main event! Put on your Nike Power Laces, flip on your lenticular caps and untuck your pants pockets because we’re going to party like it’s 2015! Just weeks away from Marty and Doc’s arrival in the year 2015, Baseball’s most futuristic ballpark will host “Back To The Future Night!”

Fans will be encouraged to wear their best futuristic “2015” costumes (as portrayed in the film), special event package buyers at marlins.com/specialevents will receive a limited-edition “Billy McFly” bobblehead doll… and there may or may not even be a surprise or two in the works! We’re going to party like it’s 2015!

Cheesy? Definitely. Cool? I’d say so.

Why not take advantage of a prediction made in a movie 26 years ago that miraculously came into the realm of possibility when the Marlins franchise began to exist? So what if both teams are in the National League and could ever meet in the World Series, not in a million years?

David’s Note: We are guessing the screenwriters also predicted incorrectly that the expansion team in Miami would be in the American League, since obviously the Cubs and Marlins can’t meet in the World Series.
