Matt Prater Booted a 64-Yard Field Goal

Prater’s lengthy boot beat the previous record of 63 yards, held by Jason Elam and Tom Dempsey.

The ball just barely made it over the crossbar, which led to an interesting rules revelation. According to officiating guru Mike Pereira, it’s illegal to jump up and swat the ball away on an attempt like this. I never knew that, but you probably did because you spend your free time diving into the NFL rulebook.
