Congratulations to Iowa coach Fran McCaffery for winning the Bobby Knight meltdown award, annually given to the coach with the most outrageous tantrum.
McCaffery completely lost his mind in a game against Wisconsin yesterday and bumped a ref. He was ejected as a result. Here’s the tantrum in full.
This isn’t the first time McCaffery has completely lost it during a game. In fact, it’s a somewhat regular occurrence for the Hawkeyes coach. This time, however, it cost Iowa the game. Wisconsin hit all four technical foul free throws and went on to win 75-71.
McCaffery’s meltdowns are useful at times. He gets his team fired up when they’re playing poorly. Oftentimes it works. Oftentimes it leads to a run of sorts. Yesterday it did not. Yesterday, McCaffery was solely responsible for a loss.
