This Green Bay Packers’ Hand Signal Is A Tribute To Smoking Jay Cutler

The Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears are mortal enemies, but humor has the ability to break down all barriers.

Take Smoking Jay Cutler for instance. The internet meme has brought great joy to Bears fans and Bear haters alike for years. And now it’s found its way into the unlikeliest of places: the Packers offensive scheme.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers addressed his joint-holding pantomime yesterday on his weekly spot with ESPN Milwaukee.

Jason Wilde: “Jeremy asks: ‘What is that pre-snap signal where you look like you’re smoking? Is that a smoke route or is that an indicator of two HIGH safeties?’ Tony asks ‘How do you keep from laughing after some of the hand gestures you do in the no huddle? They have been, shall we say, interesting.’”

Aaron Rodgers: “That was just a tribute to Jay Cutler. Because there’s that Smoking Jay Website. So I was just doing a tribute to Jay there …

JW: OK. You would never give away the actual value of those.

AR: That’s what it was!

OK, so maybe he wasn’t being serious. But let’s not let critical thought get in the way of a good story. It’s fun to imagine the entire Packers team crowded around a laptop rolling in laughter over images of a smoking and disinterested Cutler.

That’s something Cutler would really get a kick out of, right?

OK, maybe not.
