By all accounts, Erin Dimeglio is the first girl to ever play quarterback for a Florida High School. The 17-year-old entered a preseason game last Friday night and completed two passes late in the 4th quarter. Dimeglio has been practicing with the team throughout the summer and the coaches are quite impressed with her skills.
“I had a girl try out at wide receiver that couldn’t make it through practice and I had a kicker that really couldn’t make a field goal, so I didn’t keep them,” Gatewood said. “Erin can actually do what we ask of her…she completes the passes I ask, she knows the plays. … Anything I ask her to do, she does.”
Dimeglio isn’t playing football simply to make a statement about the lack of female participation in the sport, she’s trying to impress scouts—basketball scouts that is. You see, Dimeglio is a star on the hardwood and though she lacks size standing at a mere 5’6″, she feels that football will show folks she has a toughness other girls lack.
Here’s a video of Dimeglio completing passes downfield with velocity. Something that should automatically qualify her as a backup quarterback for the New York Jets.
