Now that the NFL lockout seems like it's going to be in effect for a while, players are starting to look for other employment opportunities during the hiatus. And of course Chad Ochocinco is the first to test the waters, reportedly preparing for a four-day "trial period" with Major League Soccer team KC Sporting.
The other day Ocho tweeted out a photo of himself with Juan Pablo Galavis, a Venezuelan American player — he said they were working on "muscle memory." "Pepe," as the NFL star often calls himself, has long been a soccer fan, and several months ago while in Spain trained with Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, along with Kaka, Xabi Alonso, Pepe, Albiol and Jose Mourinho.
Said KC Sporting officials in a Tweet earlier today: "Excited to have @ochocinco coming in to tryout/train with the team next week. More details to come."
You probably expected this, but I think it's a great move. The MLS badly needs some star power, and even if it's for only four days, I think it's the type of attention the league needs. And who better to provide it? The biggest famehoe in professional sports — and the one who perhaps most genuinely embraces the oft-ridiculed soccer. No, there's no chance Ocho makes the team (though maybe if they really were desperate they could suit him up for a game and throw him in in the 80th minute), but these are the types of publicity plays that I like
