Carlos Gomez Admired a Triple, Leading to a Benches-Clearing Brawl and a Sucker Punch

Milwaukee Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez has been known to admire his home runs. That habit has set off drama with other teams who don’t appreciate being shown up.

Yesterday he took it to a whole other level.

After blasting a drive to deep center against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Gomez strutted down the line before turning on the afterburners once he saw the ball actually caromed off the fence. After he dove into third with a triple, Pirates pitcher Gerritt Cole was there to give him a piece of his mind.

Tempers escalated, benches cleared and punches — most notably a vicious right from Brewers’ catcher Martin Maldonado — were thrown.

As baseball brawls go, this one was pretty legit. Of course, that’s bad news for the primaries involved once Major League Baseball sits down to dole out fines and suspensions.
