Alex Rodriguez Needs Surgery, Will Miss Significant Time

The left side of the New York Yankees’ infield is broken. And old. And rich.

Third baseman Alex Rodriguez will undergo surgery on his left hip and is unlikely to return before June.

Rodriguez, 37, complained of pain in his right hip during the playoffs, when he was relegated to a part-time role by Manager Joe Girardi. He was given a magnetic resonance imaging exam, which came back clean on that hip, which was surgically repaired before the 2009 season.

But in his off-season physical exam, Rodriguez was found to have a tear in his other hip, which was confirmed after further examinations. Rodriguez must complete a strengthening program before he can have the operation, which should take place around Jan. 1 and carries a recovery time of up to six months.

All is not lost for the Bronx Bomber boosters, though. It turns out Derek Jeter isn’t that fat after all.
