The city of Angels is about to get a visit from the New Jersey Devils.
The New York Rangers put a scare into the Devils when they rallied back from two early goals from New Jersey. The Devils took a commanding lead from first period goals from Ryan Carter and Ilya Kovalchuk, but the Rangers would storm back. The Devils must have thought the ghosts of 1994 had returned to haunt them as the Rangers scored two in the second period. Both teams went scoreless in the third period forcing an overtime. However it only took 1:03 into overtime for the Devils to punch their ticket to the Stanley Cup Finals. Ilya Kovalchuk was stopped by Henrik Lundqvist at the left side of the crease and Henrique put in the rebound for the game-winner that ignited the crowd at the Prudential Center in Newark. 40-year-old Martin Brodeur had 33 saves for New Jersey.
This will be the Devils’ first trip to the finals since 2003 and their fifth Stanley Cup Final since losing to the Rangers in the Eastern Conference Finals 18 years ago. The Devils now take on the surprising Los Angeles Kings in the Finals which begins on Wednesday night in Newark.
