The possibly insane Tyler, the Creator has a new album, "Wolf," coming out April 2nd. He released its three album covers early yesterday (the one with the inhaler is a personal favorite), and last night at around midnight East Coast time, put out the video for "Domo 23" above. The rapper plays a wrestler, Domo Genesis is his opponent, and Earl Sweatshirt is the ref, while various other Odd Future members also show up. (Including it boy the voice of Frank Ocean toward the end.) It's all pretty stupid, but it is heartening to see how much Tyler's beat production has improved. Ultimately, he might end up being more widely known for beat-making than the so-so rapping skills.
It's kind of interesting to see Tyler continue in this career direction. His first ever music video was famously "Yonkers"—a dark, dark clip that featured the then-19 year old eating a cockroach, writing an upsidedown cross on his hand, and ultimately hanging himself—but since then, he's slowly moved to more clownish material than the pitch-black stuff that made up "Bastard." Think his terrible Adult Swim show "Loiter Squad," his over-the-top live shows, this. "Domo 23" is a clear continuation.
It's all pretty fun still, but how fun will it be in five years?
