This song has been absolutely savaged around the Internet today. It's not that hard to see why: The LL Cool J verse is inexplicable. ("RIP to Robert E. Lee!") Brad Paisley—a native West Virginian, by the way, who talks in the song about wearing the Confederate flag for his heritage, even though his state exists because it rejected the Confederate flag in 1861—should not be your go-to guy if you're looking for an explanation of Reconstruction. ("They called it Reconstruction, fixed the buildings, dried some tears.") And then there's the chorus, which is utterly amazing. "I’m just a white man comin’ to you from the southland. Tryin’ to understand what it’s like not to beeeee."
But I should stop knocking it. "Accidental Racist" probably came from a good place. It's just that, well, the song is country music's answer to Franklin Delano Bluth.
