Lead singers in rock bands are much like wide receivers in football: they're egotistical prima donnas. For a great frontman of a band, there's a delicate balance between rock star attitude, cockiness, and leadership; however, if there's too much of any of those attributes, a lead singer can come across as a gigantic jerkoff. Here are the top 10 most hated rock lead singers of all time.
9. Chad Kroeger
Nickelback is considered the Vanilla Ice of rock music, which is not a compliment. Whether it's Chad Kroeger's bad perm or his voice, people just do not like him. Most agree that the Canadian Bon Jovi has generic, manufactured, uninspired music.
In my informal research, I was surprised to find that there's a strong contingency who hate U2's frontman, Bono. Most don't like his charity work. That's right, someone donating millions of dollars and hours of their valuable time to help unfortunate people around the globe totally makes him a jerk. Well, that, and those sunglasses.
7. Scott Weiland
The self-destructing Weiland has been the lead singer of both Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, though he was kicked out of the latter for continuing drug addiction issues (admitting that he joined it for the money probably didn't help either). The bipolar singer has had a history of drug abuse, including heroin and cocaine, and has been in and out of rehab with little or no success. Weiland also has a very lengthy rap sheet including arrests in 1995 for buying crack cocaine, in 1998 for buying heroin in Manhattan, in 2001 for domestic violence in Las Vegas against his wife, and in 2003 for DUI after a traffic collision. He shows up late for concerts, making fans wait for hours on end. After arriving at a Velvet Revolver concert in Germany wearing a Nazi SS hat to symbolize the lack of democracy, he was nearly arrested.
6. Courtney Love
It's not often you can be associated with the demise of two bands. The former wife of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, she's considered the grunge version of Yoko Ono. Following Cobain's death — which some conspiracy theorists even blame on Love — former bandmates Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic tried to claim the rights to Nirvana's catalogue. But since she was married to Cobain (for just three years), Love is reaping all the royalties, which are valued at over $210 million. And then there's Courtney's band Hole, for which Cobain was said to write songs early and which continues to be one of the most insufferable music acts in the world. Her drug addictions and outrageous antics have all but derailed a band that deserved derailing a long time ago.
5. Scott Stapp
Many have said the band Creed set rock music back 20 years. The masses did not like that Creed was re-packaging (and some say disguising) Christian rock as mainstream rock, and the egotistical Stapp was the scapegoat for all the hate. In 2003, Stapp contemplated suicide after drinking some Jack Daniels. We're guessing Jesus told him not to.
4. Gene Simmons
Merchandising, merchandising, merchandising: where the real money from the band is made. Kiss-the-T-shirt, Kiss-the-Visa Card, Kiss-the-lunch-box, Kiss-the-condoms, and yes, Kiss-the-Kasket. When you look up "sell out" in the dictionary, a Gene Simmons mask, available for $19.99, picture shows up.
3. Caleb Followill
Kings of Leon frontman Caleb Followill complained of heat exhaustion this week when he left his concert after singing only 11 songs in Dallas. Rumors of Followill having a drug addiction problems have been swirling, however, and the band has canceled the remainder of their U.S. tour. To make you hate Followill more, he is married to Victoria's Secret model Lily Aldridge.
2. Liam Gallagher
Gallagher truly believes he is the reincarnation of John Lennon. Liam and his brother Noel are the founders of Oasis, and in turn the Jose and Ozzie Canseco of Brit pop music. Liam is not friendly towards other bands, having attacked The Strokes, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Coldplay, Radiohead, U2, and the Rolling Stones at various points in his career. The Beatle-wannabe also hates Americans and Australians and even his brother Noel. Well, they hate each other equally because Noel has hit Liam with a chair and a cricket stick. Liam has started brawls with his brother by saying Noel's daughter was fathered by another man. In 1996, Liam backed out of singing lead vocals minutes before he was set to performance on MTV's "Unplugged." When Noel was forced to sing lead, Liam ended up heckling Noel from the balcony during the performance. He latter skipped out on nearly all of the band's U.S. tour, but showed up for an infamous MTV Awards performance, where he made rude gestures at brother Noel as he was playing, then spit beer all over the stage before storming off. After Oasis won the award for "Best Brit Album of 30 Years," Liam accepted the award, didn't thank his brother, then tossed the mic and the award into the stands.
