Who would spend $410 million on Twinkies?

Twinkies are coming back! Nobody cared about them until they were gone, but then the outrage began. Thankfully the buyout of Hostess has been cleared, so your faux-favorite snack should be back on the shelves this summer.

“Buyout firms Apollo Global Management and Metropoulos & Co teamed up for Hostess’s snack cake brands, paying $410 million for Twinkies, Ho Hos, Ding Dongs and Donnettes.” I obviously don’t know the sales numbers for those brands, but I haven’t seen someone eat any of them in 20 years. They didn’t even pick up the real breadwinner, Wonder Bread. So who are these companies that were so keen to buy Sgt. Al Powell’s favorite snack?

Apollo Global Management owns such powerhouses as Claire’s Accessories, Linens ‘n Things, and several cruise companies. We all know that cruises have been getting bad press, but I hear that mall ear piercings are at an all time high.

Metropoulos, on the other hand, turned Chef Boyardee into a small fortune and more recently bought Pabst Blue Ribbon. If you’ve been to a bar lately, you know that the hipster favorite is doing pretty damn well.

I’ll assume that their people are smarter than I, and this is a brilliant investment. Who knows, maybe we get a full-scale Twinkie revival led by Tallahassee.
