How to make Jim Beam Rice Whiskey Treats

Colin Joliat

A drunk man once said, “If Judas ate Rice Whiskey Treats at the Last Supper, Jesus might still be alive today.” That man was me, and I was specifically referring to these little Jim Beam laced squares from heaven.

Marshmallows in cereal are great, but cereal held together solely by marshmallows is even better. Add in black cherry Red Stag from Jim Beam and you might have the ultimate snack. The fruit in the whiskey means you can reasonably eat these for breakfast or take them to your next party.

I’m attempting to get more creative with my ingredient pictures because, quite frankly, I’m bored of the straight on photo. I’m pretty sure none of you are shopping based on an image when an ingredient list is only a few short scrolls away, so I’m comfortable that you don’t need to see every item in the final product.

Whiskey tasting glasses are abundant in my apartment, so I put them to use holding the two main ingredients. Beam Red Stag belongs in a shot glass though, so that’s where it remained. As I’m sure you’re curious, no, that isn’t the actual liquor that went into the pot. I took the shot immediately after the photo.

Watching pretty little puffed marshmallows melt into goop was actually somewhat depressing. A lesser man likely would have been caught crying, but thankfully I have deficiency in natural tear production so it wasn’t an issue. Just be sure you keep stirring occasionally or it will stick to the pot. You don’t want to kill marshmallows only to waste them.

Action shot! This photo was almost the downfall of the whole operation. The marshmallows start to get really sticky once they cool, so wasting time taking a picture of me pouring a shot into the pot was dangerous. Your slight happiness was worth it though.

Unfortunately this is the one case when you can have too much of a good thing. No one likes soggy Rice Krispies, so if you feel compelled to use more whiskey, add it to your stomach instead of the bowl.

As I mentioned in the Cookie Dough Brownie Cups post, stirring is one of my strong suits. That came in handy because stirring is really all that’s left to do at this point. Take a big wooden spoon and then mix it until all of the Rice Krispies are stuck in the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man’s sticky grasp.

After that you dump the mix into an buttered 8×8 inch glass pan and push it until it’s flat. I seem to have forgotten to take a picture of that, probably because I was too flustered from the action shot, but just visualize and attack. It can be tough to work with sticky krispies, so I put parchment paper over the top and used my box of leftover Teddy Grahams from the S’mores Brownies to make sure everything was flat.

After letting the Rice Whiskey Treats cool, use a sharp knife to cut them into pieces. I skipped the outer half-inch so that they would be perfectly (ha!) square. Really it just gave me an excuse to eat an entire ring of Jim Beam Rice Whiskey Treats.

The original recipe comes from Kattys Kitchen. She uses regular bourbon and less of it, but I found the fruit in Red Stag adds a nice touch.

Ingredients:

  • 5 ½ cups Rice Krispies
  • 10-oz. bag marshmallows
  • 1/4 cup salted butter
  • 2 shots Black Cherry Red Stag from Jim Beam
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. In a sauce pan, melt butter, stir in cinnamon and marshmallows.
  2. Once marshmallows have melted completely, remove from heat and quickly stir in bourbon and a sprinkle of salt.
  3. Don’t stop for pictures… narcissist.
  4. Add Rice Krispies and stir until evenly combined.
  5. Press treats into buttered 8×8″ baking dish.
  6. Admit you can’t level the treats.
  7. Cover with parchment (wax) paper, find square object, press down evenly.
  8. Add a sprinkle of finishing salt over the top.
  9. Cut into squares with sharp knife.
  10. Stack on penguin plate.
  11. Watch disappear.
  12. Mourn the loss of your delicious Rice Whiskey Treats.
  13. Move on to next recipe.
