Ketchup counterfeiting schemes are apparently a thing

By / 10.23.12

In what’s likely the strangest condiment story you’ll read today, a Heinz Tomato Ketchup counterfeiting scheme has been uncovered in Dover, NJ.

Inside a privately owned Dover warehouse are the remnants of an abandoned Heinz Tomato Ketchup counterfeiting scheme.

The ketchup appears to be real but the labels on the plastic bottles are a fraud, according to a Heinz spokesman.

Company officials, who visited Dover last week, believe someone purchased traditional Heinz Ketchup and transferred it from large bladders into individual bottles labeled “Simply Heinz,” a premium variety made with sugar instead of high fructose corn sweetener.

The first thing that comes to mind is the brilliant scheme by the Always Sunny in Philadelphia gang to buy barrels of gasoline and re-sell it door-to-door at a profit. This at least has a little more promise, but how easy is it for some random company to sell cases of ketchup to a store? I’m not grocery business, but I wouldn’t imagine that many have a middle-man that specializes solely in tomato based condiments.

It seems like this is an isolated incident, and the scheme didn’t really get off the ground, but I’m still going to avoid Heinz for awhile. It’s back to collegiate dipping for me – all ranch all the time.
