Coke created a sober version of frat handcuff party

Coke’s new marketing campaign forces college freshman to meet each other, much like the all-time frat favorite, The Handcuff Party.

If you didn’t go to frat parties, you missed out. I’m sorry; it’s true. I have no doubt you still did crazy stuff, but it’s just not the same. For example: there’s no chance you handcuffed yourself to a woman and dropped the key in the bottom of a fifth. That doesn’t happen in real life… or does it?

The latest ad from Coke capitalizes on the problem most old people complain about – kids are always those damn internet phones. Admittedly I’ve started to get irritated by it too, but that’s probably just because I’m lousy company in real life. For the new ad they stuck a cooler full of free Coke in a room full of college freshman and watched the magic happen.

The only catch? They could only open the bottle by making the caps hook up like a couple of freshman Na’vi on Pandora. Or use a pen, but whatever. It’s a real world example that suggesting “just the tip” actually works.

The Friendly Twist cap is a clever idea from Coke and makes for a good commercial, but it’s solving a non-existent problem. Freshman year I walked down every women’s hall in my dorm and introduced myself to anyone with an open door. It’s safe to say that sexually enterprising freshman will continue to do that regardless of technology.
