New record setting whisky sells for $628,000

The Macallan

The price of whisky has skyrocket in the past decade, but some spirits are on another level all together. One particular offering from The Macallan just sold for a record $628,000 at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong.

The new record was set by The Macallan M in a 6L crystal Lalique decanter. For those who are bad at math, that’s $3,095 per ounce, or almost 2.5x the value of gold. It almost seems like cheating to have a major portion of the value tied up in the vessel itself, but you can’t just toss The Macallan M in any old bottle. Instead, they commissioned the handmade decanter that took 17 craftsman over 50 hours to create.

While the decanter commands significant money, the real star is obviously what’s contained within, The Macallan M. The limited edition spirit comes from seven first fill Spanish Sherry Oak casks selected by The Macallan’s master whisky maker, Bob Dalgarno. The oldest whisky in the bunch was distilled a ridiculous 74 years ago, making it older than 99% of the people I know.
