New drinkware detects date rape drugs

By / 12.12.12

Most crowd-funded ideas are great ways to get fun new products, but DrinkSavvy’s date rape preventing drinkware is worth a donation just to make the world a better place. Don’t worry, you still get rewards though.

IndieGoGo

Being male and irritating, I have very little concern about being drugged at a bar. That doesn’t mean that it isn’t a major issue. Almost all of us have friends who, at a minimum, believe that something had been slipped into their drink. There are plenty of rules, tips, and ways to try and keep yourself safe when you’re at a bar, but nothing is foolproof. The best we can do is to be as prepared as possible, and that’s where DrinkSavvy comes into play.

This IndieGoGo campaign is developing drinkware, such as straws, cups, and eventually glassware, that changes color when it comes in contact with any of the three major date rape drugs. While this isn’t a flawless plan either, it’s certainly one worth the investment. The straws seem like an easy enough thing too carry around. I’m too old to have use for the plastic cups – I know everyone who steps foot in my house – but those would be of huge value to frat houses across the country. The added cost more than pays for itself in the peace of mind the women at the party could enjoy. And I think glassware is the ultimate end game. If bars stocked GHB-proof glasses, the world would be a safer place.

DrinkSavvy is trying to raise $50k and they’re already almost halfway there with over 1000 people donating. If you want to kick in for the future of safe drinking, you can visit the IndieGoGo page here.
