Goose Island released their first wave of Bourbon County Brand Stout yesterday, but you’ll be lucky to find it.
Yesterday was one of the biggest days of the year for beer lovers, and I headed straight to one of, if not the largest liquor store in Chicago immediately after work. Unfortunately Goose Island’s Bourbon County Brand Stout had yet to arrive when I showed up. Unless I wanted to start loitering like a bum for an indefinite length of time, I was SOL. Not willing to leave empty handed, I stocked up on Oktoberfest beers instead (look for coverage of that next week). That’s just the luck of the draw when trying to track down a world class beer like BCBS.
Brewed in honor of the 1000th batch at our original Clybourn brewpub. A liquid as dark and dense as a black hole with thick foam the color of a bourbon barrel. The nose is an intense mix of charred oak, chocolate, vanilla, caramel and smoke. One sip has more flavor than your average case of beer.
It shouldn’t be a surprise that a beer rated 97 on BeerAdvocate and 100 on RateBeer is tough to find. The upside is that they brewed 4x more than last year so there’s still hope. I’ve mentioned before that I think the sale of Goose Island to Anheuser-Busch was a good thing, and this is an example of why. The only reason they could manage the larger output this year is because they shipped the capacity cows that are 312, IPA, and Honkers Ale over to the East Coast. That still doesn’t mean I’ll get to taste the black nectar of the gods, but some of you might.
