For the longest time, and maybe even a little bit now, I actually thought he was mauled by a seal as a boy, which is why he chose the moniker -- a big 'fuck you' to all the seals out there. His Wikipedia page, or some other online biography, probably addresses this longstanding question, but I've never cared to look or educate myself with facts because the places my imagination takes me every time I see his divot-face is far better than the knowledge of the truth could ever be.
