If you needed further proof that you should avoid Times Square at all costs, this ought to do it.
On July 27, 21-year-old New Yorker Brett Cohen convinced New York's busiest intersection that he was famous. And he pulled off this wildly successful prank despite not really looking like any one celebrity. He hired body guards, "paparazzi," and hangers-on, and hundreds of tourists fell for it.
The fact that curious bystanders stopped and stared isn't that amazing. What makes this both great and a disturbing look into the celebrity culture is how the onlookers insisted they knew Brett from "Spiderman," or his music career, or other completely different projects.
Ah, mass hysteria. Where would human nature be without it?
