The only possible explanation for this is that David Banks wished for an exploding birthday cake, and that the cake decided to grant his wish instantly.  

The tension escalates nicely here, being that the viewer isn't exactly sure when the buildup is finally gonna drop. The payoff, albeit rather short-lived, is worth the hype.
