Vermont Lawmaker Tries To Give State A Latin Motto, Morons Go On Anti-Latino Rampage

You know, I thought I’d seen it all when it comes to Facebook comment idiocy. I was wrong. Oh, man, was I wrong.

A Vermont television station seeking feedback on a lawmaker’s proposal to give the state an official Latin motto (Stella quarta decima fulgeat) turned into a three-ring circus when Facebook users came out in droves to spew vitriol at those damn Romans who moved to America in the 4th Century BC and still won’t learn English.

Ready? Strap in because it’s about to get all weird and racist up in here.

Seriously. You can’t make this stuff. And normally I’m not a fan of the roundups where people say stupid stuff online. But this … this is just too perfect to ignore.

Joe Benning, the man behind the proposed legislation, was understandably shocked by the backlash.

I anticipated suffering the backroom internal joking from my colleagues in the legislature.  What I did not anticipate was the vitriolic verbal assault from those who don’t know the difference between the Classics and illegal immigrants from South America.

Uh, yeah, Joe. There’d be a real problem if you did anticipate the citizens you govern would stoop so low. At the very least it would be a bad move to say so publicly.

Read a book once in awhile, you guys. It won’t kill ya.
