I love this story so much, it just has to be shared. It comes from a website called Allproudamericans.com, a Geocities-esque site with a massive Facebook following. It's the type of terribly-designed site your grandmother e-mails you links from.
But the meat and potatoes of this post is about badass 'MERICAN POWs flipping the birth to their North Korean captures during the Korean War. As the story goes, United States prisoners of would repeatedly gave the finger to the North Korean photographer when their photo was being taken for North Korean propaganda. The prisoners were forced to watch a film about the North Korean soccer team visiting London for the Olympics. Apparently they were inspired by an image of a man flipping off the Korean soccer team in the film, realizing the Koreans didn’t know what that hand sign meant. Moving forward, they gave the finger to the propaganda photographers as often as possible. Here's the kicker: "When the Koreans realized the hand signal was always being used, they asked the prisoners what it meant. The prisoners told the Koreans it was a HAWAIIAN GOOD LUCK GESTURE!!!"
Excuse me while I take off my shirt, pour beer on my chest, and screaming "U-S-A, U-S-A. U-S-A" boisterously around the office. Bless these commie-hatin' heroes.
