Teen Rescued By Firefighter As A Baby Invites Him To Attend Her High School Graduation 17 Years Later

There are no expiration date on Bro Moves, brosephs.

17 years ago, Mike Hughes, then captain of the Wenatchee, Washington Police Department, responded to an emergency call about a house fire.

Hughes detailed the scene to ABC News,

“Our engine pulled up and the whole interior part of the house was burning heavily. My partner and I went in and I got a call on the radio that they suspected somebody was in the house.

I went straight to the place in the house that I thought I’d find somebody. The door to the bedroom was partially open and she was in her crib just squirming so i snatched her up and got her to the front door and handed her off to the first firefighter who was there.”

The nine month old baby in the crib was Dawnielle Davison, a senior set to graduate high school just weeks ago.

The rescue impacted Hughes so much that he reached out to Dawnielle on Facebook when she was in middle school with the following message:

“I sent her a note that said, ‘I think i pulled you out of a fire when you were a baby,’” Hughes recalled. “And she gave me a test…she wrote back, ‘Oh yeah, what was my mom doing?’”

“I replied, ‘Well she was at work and your dad was there,’” Hughes said.

They kept in touch through Dawnielle’s journey through high school and as she was set to graduate, she reached out to her life-saver and invited him to the ceremony.

“She sent me an invitation so I thought, ‘By golly, I’m going,’” he said. “It meant an awful lot to me. I was really happy.”

Matt’s love of writing was born during a sixth grade assembly when it was announced that his essay titled “Why Drugs Are Bad” had taken first prize in D.A.R.E.’s grade-wide contest. The anti-drug people gave him a $50 savings bond for his brave contribution to crime-fighting, and upon the bond’s maturity 10 years later, he used it to buy his very first bag of marijuana.
