The Archives of Sexual Behavior polled 192 college students to reach a consenus on four types of behaviors: One-night stands, booty calls, friends-with-benefits and serious romantic relationships. Their methodology was as follows:

Each participant was asked to rank how likely booty calls, friends with benefits (people who have casual sex while remaining “just friends”), long-term relationships and one-night stands were to fulfill each of four functions: sexual gratification, social and emotional support, a “trial run” for a serious relationship and a placeholder to stave off boredom or to bide time until something better came along.

What was the conclusion? Well, one-night stands were sex with one person once with little emotion. Booty calls had slightly more emotional investement than one-night stands. Friends-with-benefits were like booty calls, but with interaction outside of sex.

… duh? What was the point of this research? Well, the study also tried to infer why we do these behaviors. Serious romantic relationships were for socioemotional support. Friends-with-benefits were typically either using each other as a placeholder until someone came along or as a test run for a new relationship. Booty calls and one-night stands occurred out of a desire for sexual gratification.

Science. Wasting everyone's time since the 1400s.
