This is a little bit local and political for us, but it's absolutely worth sharing. All credit goes to Complex.com's Foster Kamer, who captured this tremendous video of a bat-sh*t racist Upper West Side resident calling into NY1's evening call-in program, The Call. Since New York City is in the middle of a hotly-contested mayorial election, the subject du jour was an issue that's a political tinderbox here in the city: The NYPD's Stop and Frisk program, a policy Mayor Bloomberg and his allies are adament about defending.
Host John Schiumo can barely believe what he hears out of Joan from the Upper West Side's mouth. She brazenly claims "Manhattan is special. We are New York! Brooklyn and Queens and Staten Island, I....I don't even like talking about those kinds of places!," saying she wants New York City's controversial "stop and frisk" policy stopped in the outer boroughs but continued in Manhattan.
Because it's special.
The rich and entitled? Sure sounds like it. This is the kind of bourgeois, Manhattan-myoptic elitism that gives our fair city a terrible international reputation.
Let's play three truths and a lie based on things that actually came out of this woman's mouth:
- "You can't expect us to live by the same rules we dictate to other people, for heaven's sakes."
- "Just because people like me are against Stop and Frisk in places like Brooklyn and Queens and Staten Island doesn't mean we don't want it to continue in Manhattan"
- "Affordable housing, New Yorkers accept in the boroughs, but you don't want those people living around you!"
- "I hate all minorities who aren't white."
